Yeah, seriously...just ask George Bush. I just read a wonderful book called The Way of the World that mentions how Bush handled many things that way (at least early in his presidency) and we have seen a lot of the disastrous results of that.
A good read, and interesting but not all that surprising. I have this feeling that most creative people either don't get college degrees or don't do what they majored in. School can sometimes suppress creativity, but that's just me philosophizing.
Ugh, MSNBC has no idea what good game quotes are, what was that? Plus where's "You, the master of unlocking!" from RE?
I think this article touches on a lot of things I've been noticing as well. I think Japanese game developers have started using American techniques. It's really quite superior, especially in the area of control. I much prefer the pacing and controls of western games and it's really evident how more intuitive they are. Look at the change in RE4 or MGS4. Those games are much better for their improved controls, which were influenced by Western design techniques.
I liked what he said about making each frame so distinguishable that it looked like it was from Dead Space and not some other game. It resembles Doom 3 in a lot of ways, but when I do see screens from Dead Space I don't mistake it for anything else so I think they nailed that.
I remember when my uncle introduced me to Jimi Hendrix. I thought I had never listened to him and he threw in a "Best Of" CD and I had already known and loved just about everything on it. I just didn't know it was him.
That Games For Change stuff sounds quite interesting. I think games are slowly getting there with stuff like BioShock, you mentioned Halo's story, GTA even, and I think Fallout 3 will have a lot.
I've heard that a lot of game design programs, particularly in the UK are fairly worthless. I have heard that Full Sail is pretty good though, as is that other one I can't remember right now.
I don't know about you, but I was tossing Tie Fighters...
That's the thing about this article though, it's not "doom and gloom" at all, it's simply questioning why Sony veered the way they did when they didn't really need to. And while a risky play, and a good one for hardcore gamers, it doesn't bode well from a business point of view as they will likely not be as dominant as they could have been.
He says it's a great console and will probably finish in second place, but it won't have the percentage of the market it could hav...
100% agree, just add paragraph breaks next time so my eyes don't bleed again ;-)
See, the thing is Denis, it's not about forcing us to "get it." That's your job as a developer, to create a game that we intuitively "get." You can cry all day and night about people not understanding your genius, but true genius should be apparent and self-evident.

That is probably the coolest game I've ever seen. Looks like I'm getting a Wii. In fact, if Nintendo were smart they would really try to push this with Sega to the forefront of every hardcore gaming mag or site.
I'm a big fan of N+, I have it on XBLA but it's a hell of a pain in the ass. I don't think I'm enough of a skilled gamer for it...or Ikaruga for that matter. I'm currently stuck on both games.
I've always been a big fan of the franchise and this one sounds quite a bit like the previous ones, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I wonder how "new" it will feel though.
Maybe my kids will have a treat I never experienced...playing games in class. What a world it will be in 30 years assuming the robots don't take it over.
Really good tribute to some of the best minds making games in the West. I'm a huge fan of the Housers (though GTA could use better mission variety) and Tim Schafer, who far too few gamers know about.
Kind of like the days when rock was played to and listened by the evil spawn of the devil himself.
Actually, I still kind of like that classification. I will eat your soul!
I think the article is spot-on. I think there is a disconnect between easter and western interest. I know that here in the west, we love action and hell the more blood there is, the better right? In the east they couldn't care less for violence. Just add some magic lol
