Just because there's only 200,000 (BTW it's actually closer to 1 million FYI, there's over 750,000 online right now as I speak and its 9AM) people online at any given time doesn't mean that more people care about singleplayer, it means that not everybody is on at the same time.
Looking at it statistically it's the exact opposite, more people care about the online then they do the campaign, the amount of hour's on average for people playing the campaign...
Yes, it's part of the artstyle, it's supposed to feel depressing.

It's a matter of what you personally define as "better"
If you like a lot of color in your graphics than Uncharted 3 is the way to go.
If you like a more gritty look then Gears 3 it is.
If you like a lot of verticality in your gameplay Uncharted is better.
If you like cover to cover shooting and intense gunplay then go Gears.

Is anyone else having some trouble picking up medals from treasure chests.
It works most of the time, but sometimes *especially on chateau* it won't do anything, my character just stands there.

You do get an advantage while standing, mobility.
Sometimes especially on consoles moving the actual gun can cause you to to overshoot where you need to be pointing at, so instead you just move your body slightly keeping the crosshairs in the same spot allowing you to more perfectly line up a shot.
