They are not useless on a gaming console as it saves me from having an extra box by my TV and allows me to use the xmb when watching TV. It also more conveniently allows me to enter a game.
I've been using PlayTV since it came out and have loads of space left on my HDD. It's absolutely fantastic.

PS3 had had a DVR for years. Ever heard of PlayTV (Europe) and Torne (Japan).
