Yes you can. But it will be unnecessary. At the third area, my character feels so OP that I had to go up in difficulty to get a challenge. Most of the benefits will come from armors. Ghost/Ronin armor for stealth, Sakai/Gosaku for hordes of enemies, Samurai Armor for duels.
