I'd rather pay $60 for a great game then $180 for a yearly service to get one good game loaded with microtransactions and a bunch of mediocre filler to try and keep people on the hook.

Think of it in terms of football, if a football team has lost thirteen games in a row and won their fourteenth is any other team really considering them a rival? Gears 5 doesn't put MS in the position of rival, it just gets them out of the position of spectator.
