From what I've seen in official descriptions, it lists both Ghibli & Moebius (or other European comics) as inspirations.
Yes, I mentioned that in the article proper. But they admitted it was the drunken fist style, so unless they do request to have the headline changed (which I will comply with), I see no reason to not highlight their inspirations.
That is a good point indeed, but when you still have games like Psychonauts providing the gold standard in uniqueness, or even bits like the Raptor News Network level/boss fight in DmC or the Polito bank robbery in Grand Theft Auto V, to name more recent examples, I still believe that we can have superb and unique level design in our games if the developers give it their all.
Not that I'm against Super Mario Maker's level of creativity, because I see the point that you're making, but keep in mind that Super Mario Maker still uses pre-made assets, backgrounds, power-ups, et cetera, from previous games, whereas Studiopolis is a completely brand new creation on all levels. And by that logic, RPG Maker or Garry's Mod are the ultimate games for level design as well.
Also, Nintendo has had a nasty habit of taking down Super Mario Maker...
...And I would like to thank the N4G mods for blocking several stories I've had in the past for trivial reasons or non-errors in descriptions, but somehow NOT catching the blatant money/monkey typo this time around, & for not allowing me to edit articles after they're approved, even for incorrect information.
