Sorry, but Mario isn't as critical as you may think. I'm fairly certain the majority of consumers of electronics don't think about Mario when debating whether they should buy an electronic device. Even if he did grab their attention, people can find plenty of $1 apps that are reminiscent of a Mario game. Really, the hardcore fans of Mario are the only people I can imagine who would buy a 3DS simply because it has Mario on it over an ipad.

Leave games alone. Taking a game and making a movie is not the same as making one from a novel. Games already are visible adaptations. They don't need another visible take. Making a book from a game could work fine, though; expand the universe a bit.
Jaffe may have a fairly credible past in terms of the games he's made, but I'll take his prediction to such a large portion of the gaming industry lightly.
