No. There is an upgrade option for ultimate. It is not mandatory to have live or game pass sub for 36 months. It says "upto" 36 months. So you dont need to add more time. It upgrades to current sub.
But try and see all options to increase your sub options. Take one month free game pass if you havent. Take one month live free if that option is avilable. Thats two months and to that add ultimate so you will get two months ultimate atle...
Those who are on live (most) have always made sure to have their sub extended for more than a year.
When ever there is a deal i at least buy and pile up live for my account. I had it till 2021 and now its 2022.
For almost three years i will not spend a $ on games.
End of march 2022. I had it till 2021. Ordered from amazon for 1 year. I will redeem that code and will upgrade to ultimate. I think i wont buy games till then except HALO. Halo is instant/automatic purchase for me.
I will keep my eye on ultimate here after.

Yes for a guy like you. Theres people who have their subs until 2021 as they got them deals long back. Even if you dont want 36 months then one can just buy it for $1 and the remaining live sub converts to ultimate.

It will be. Revealed in 2015 its been exclusive since 4 yrs. For sure it looks like one more year it will be exclusive.

Subsription is by account and not platform when it comes to Xbox if im not wrong. Xbox as a service.... Thats fulfilled.
All playanywhere games are available. I doubt non-play anywhere games would be available in the beginning. May be in future
36months from now it has to last. Wonder whats going to happen in jun 2022.
