That is my reasoning too but i do believe nerd and video game culture has a sexist undertone (see: Dead or Alive) this, to me comes from the culture's need to be victimised before hand e.g. a man gets bullied, seeks solace in a game, girls are mean to him so he plays as a big strong man in the game "to impress himself" and resent any real people who might have been conencted to that victimisation and who don't meet the model of "big strong white man"

We rely heavily on victimisation, many people who consider themselves nerds have once in their lives been victimised so if a medium has something they "can't relate to" as a main protagonist e.g. a woman or someone who is not a middle class white man with glasses and a pocket protector, they get annoyed.
