The Forerunners are the creators and the ones inhabiting the Halo's before Master Chief came around...Therefore making the Forerunners as important as the rings..

Daxx your right i believe that the next halo game will be the prequel highlighting the Forerunners story and the creation of the Halo's. Now that would be the best way to go but if not the next thing will be the Marathon franchise which happens 100 years after Halo 3 (did you see the Marathon icon in halo 3)
