This is another example of new/young gamers being completely baffled by long established gaming conventions. Even the terms they use, "mashing", is completely wrong and just illustrates their lack of basic knowledge.

You don't "mash" the button, as in, you don't clumsily stab at it like the author of this piece seems to do. Rather you "trigger" the switch using a slight, but rapid motion. It's a skill which you develop over time and ...

We saw what happened when they changed the main character of the series of trying and appeal to the "mature" sensibilities of people like yourself. The result was a train wreck. Literally hundreds of games are released every year which are designed from the ground up to "safely" fit within the precise tastes of you people, to even have one game series which dares to be itself is too much for you though isn't it?

Why can't game characters be fun? Wh...

"Are New Gamers Afraid of a Challenge?"

Yes, yes they are. There's a cancerous attitude within the gaming audience today which is perpetuated by the gaming press, where the player expects a game to be nothing but a narrative-driven ego massage. Each and every time they come across something they are not good at, they bitch about the game being broken, never will they admit that it's their own lack of understanding (or competence) of the game's mechanics ...

No. I do actually care about the game, I'm a huge fan of The Elder Scrolls universe. Caring about something doesn't mean blind loyalty, this is something the gaming audience seems to have major problems with. If you truly care about something, you want it to be the best it can be.

I have been involved in all Beta weekends so far and right up to the latest build, The Elder Scrolls Online plays like shit, with the biggest problem being the overly simplistic combat. Ther...

"You Won't Believe How Good The Elder Scrolls Online Looks"

No. You won't believe how fucking terribly it plays.

I hate the way these games journalists always wheel out DmC as an example of a quality "remake". It simply isn't. Devil May Cry was a series which led the way in action game mechanics, in fact it established the Stylish Action genre to begin with.

With the exception of Devil May Cry 2, each game brought an extremely deep combat system to the table, a system with an extremely high skill ceiling and one which is open-ended enough to stand up to years worth of pla...

"I'm a total trophy whore I cant even remember how I put so many hours into games on the PS2 when the games didn't have them"

This is the saddest thing about this whole "Trophy" nonsense; you actually have to be told to play a game to completion, you don't simply do so naturally out of enjoyment and curiosity. This attitude from the audience is the biggest problem with gaming as a medium today, the player is immediately grabbed by the hand and ...

What I cannot get over about this whole thing is how complacent people are to these activities. The saddest thing I've read regarding this whole mess is people actually blindly defending a corporation such as Microsoft, simply because they own one of their products.

This is absolutely ridiculous. We are talking about governments using consumer products to spy on the populace with or without the knowledge or consent of the manufacturers of said products. We should be point...

No the "juddering" is not screen tearing. This fault refers to the TV passthrough feature, it is not game related.

Speaking of supporting good games and ignoring the bad attitude of gamers today; grab yourself a copy of The Wonderful 101, it's worth its weight in gold.

Peter Molyneux, the maker of clumsy and awkward games has no place describing anything with that label. His games were interesting in a time when processing power massively limited what was possible in game design, he filled a niche with some interesting ideas. But that time is long gone, the man is not only completely out of touch with game design, he is also completely out of touch with the gaming medium.

It's sad that the gaming press give him so much space to spout h...

Look at Ikaruga. You can finish Ikaruga in about half an hour, yet I've played it for hundreds of hours over many years and I'm still loving it. Psyvariar is the same, 30 minutes or so if you don't continue, I've been playing it for close to a decade. Same with Devil May Cry 3 (thousands of hours), Bayonetta (thousands of hours). I could go on all day...

Dear Morganfell, I just wanted to say that your post is the single best thing I have read online in a long time. The problems you state, the situation you describe, is precisely what is going on today and it must stop.

I have been involved in the production of a few titles and have written a number of "Official" guides for titles such as Bayonetta and Vanquish. Working closely with the studios involved and getting some hands-on experience in designing and tuning ga...

This is 100% true, why on earth have so many people down-voted this comment?

If you are interested in game design, or have been involved in production, it is extremely helpful to pick apart game systems which do not quite work. If you can break down their system and then isolate the exact components which bring it down, you learn an important lesson from it.

I swear, the attitude of the gaming audience today is just baffling.

It's so sad that a game director actually has to tell the gaming audience these things.

Games are not movies. I know most of you really cannot quite grasp this concept, but I will try and lay it down for you. Games are meant to be played repeatedly, this is the basic nature of a "game". Games are not passive experiences which play out for a set duration as films do, the player is actually part of the equation, this is what makes a game a game to begin with. <...

EVERY review of any sort of action game from IGN needs to be taken with a massive pinch of salt. The reviewers are incredibly lazy, they simply engage in a box-ticking exercise and never bother to appraise a game on its own merits.

Hunting games such as this are now a genre, there are a set of conventions which you find in all games of this genre. To criticise one game for having elements of another is just ignorant and lazy on the part of the reviewer. They wouldn't, fo...

All this constant coverage of how "difficult" Demon's and Dark Souls are is really tiresome. These games are not difficult, the only way they differ from the usual mainstream titles is that there are clear penalties for failure.

Look at the vast majority of mainstream titles today; barely any of them impose any sort of penalty for failure (you either respawn immediately or failure is impossible). This is something which completely goes against all design convent...
