You can buy a new "last-gen" console if it breaks. If you have games collection that is worth thousands of euros then a couple of hundreds should not be a problem for you I guess.

Who in the world would advertise a Store update? It does not make any sense.
I think it's either PSASBR related (Ape Escape character announcement?) or a new Michael trailer.
In a perfect it would be a double announcement of inFamous for PS3 and Ape Escape for VITA. Or vice versa.

Actually they have never said that.
They talked about console-like experience. It means dual analog sticks, full PSN services integration and impressive looking games for sure. But they never said VITA has PS3 quality graphics.
It's different stories with N64 and Gamecube. N64 used old and inefficient cartridges instead of CDs so it was a pretty easy job for PS1 to win the market and devs' interest. Gamecube, on the other hand, suffered from very succesful PS2's headstart and its weird design, I believe.
Wii lacked 3rd party support not because of devs stubborness, but because of very underpowered hardware. Devs couldn't port their games so they just put cheap spin-offs instead... Or ignored the Wii completely
PlayStation is one of the most profitable Sony's divisions at the moment and it's quite funny to see all those "Sony needs to leave consoles market" articles.

I have to agree, it looks very Metro-ish.
Though a few months ago I tried designing a PS4 UI with Photoshop and ended up with something similar to this new PS Store. I assume that Metro and especially X360's UI is something that gets into your mind.
