PCs are constantly evolving and don't exist in discrete "generations" like consoles, so this article is a bit ridiculous.

Why is it unusual for pornographic games to be treated the same as all other forms of pornography? AO only means retailers like WalMart don't shelve the titles, leaving it to "specialist" stores. You know, the places people who still buy porn get their porn.

It's an interesting set of choices. GamaSutra puts a lot of thought into these, so it's hard to really pick a fight over their lists even when you disagree.

It's silly to put Crysis or any PC title in with console games. PC games simply look better: console hardware would have been barely equal to a mid-range gaming PC back when they were released. If you have a rig that can run new games at max settings, they will look better than the best console title. That's just how it is.

I don't see how this is really true. Get a Guitar Hero controller and flash a 360, and a pirate only has to buy one of the ten or twenty rhythm titles out there to be able to play pirated versions of them all.

And of course, the article writer doesn't appear to realise that piracy doesn't yet exist on the PS3. People don't do it primarily on 360 purely because it's easier, but because the PS3 hasn't been cracked yet.

The market for it is probably too small - especially given that the stronger titles in the series are already out there and playable. And Capcom are just wary of SF3 stuff in general. It panned out so badly for them at the time, and each iteration was a horrible (if very pretty) mess.

Dante's Inferno is too derivative to really be competitive with the bigger action titles. It'll be fun, but unlike Dead Space, it doesn't do anything to actually improve on the game it has stolen so much from. Someone at Visceral has really dropped the ball: they had a chance to better God of War's formula and they missed it.

You can never get gamers to agree on a list of anything, especially not "best to worst" Final Fantasy.

X should be dead last, though. I hope whoever it was that felt random battles were still acceptable on PS2 hardware got fired.

There couldn't really be a crossover because one of the defining characteristics of ArcSys fighters is that the subsystems they have (burst, faultless defense and what have you) are very unique, very series-specific and the characters are designed around them. Several of the abilities characters in Guilty Gear have would be broken in any other game - they are only fair because Guilty Gear's systems make them so. A cross-over would require a complete overhaul of one or both casts of characters...

Seems a charitable review (and score). I am interested to know if they really think the peripheral is a good "solution" to whatever problem they think Tony Hawk has. The series has clearly always been arcadey, and most gamers have no clue how to monkey skating moves (nor any desire to). Honestly, it has always seemed to me like the pad was never an issue - it was always stagnating gameplay and bad new ideas.

If they stopped designing characters and writing stories for a shrinking teenage Japanese market, they would probably find more success.

There is nothing about a game like Star Ocean 4 that appeals to the mainstream gamer - especially not all the creepy stuff Otaku love. Basically, they need to abandon their domestic market and focus on making games people in the West won't be embarrassed to play.

This is and remains a horrible idea, especially with Advent Children-lite graphics. There is just too much incongruence between the characters and their setting for it to fly; there is no way to have Cait Sith and Red XIII work when they aren't stylised anime designs, and all the goofy stuff would have to go. Too much would look out of place in a photo-realistic HD game: the cross-dressing, for instance, or the leap to slapstick and a snowboarding mini-game barely 15 minutes after a character...

I for one am greatly anticipating Gears of War: Boobs Edition and these screenshots look decent. Apparently no one told Tecmo they are supposed to touch up their screens for PR purposes like Square-Enix habitually do, though.

I disagree with MadWorld (I love Clover, but a bad game is a bad game) and Mirror's Edge (nice idea, shoddy execution). Some of these games being neglected is pure tragedy, though.

I would have expected this to be a thing that is just trivially true. Winter releases happen with the expectation that many games will be bought as Christmas presents. Barely news, but good for Turn 10, I guess.

I wouldn't have said it was a good top 10 "of the console's life up until now", let alone "of all time", but not my list, I guess. It's a decent line-up even if it's missing more than a few things.

Naughty Dog are having a good run this time round, it would seem.

It couldn't have been done on PS2 without serious sacrifices being made along the way. Not until this gen have open world games been able to have the scale and detail necessary to be "immersive" - GoW's scripted, linear approach was simply better for it back then. People tend to forget how empty Hyrule Field was when they put on their nostalgia goggles.

Makes sense. Got to get the hype train started long in advance to get the best results. People were frothing at the mouth over MW2 since E3, and doing the same with FFXIII now.
