Majority of them are terrible now.
The last good era of FPS was the mid 2000s. Borderlands series, COD4, and MW2 are exceptions.

It's probably because you didn't play around the time this was considered innovative. More JRPGs are like this now, but this was considered the pinnacle of JRPGs in the 90s.
