Easily, cause before way before FF was the super entity it is today, games like:
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Phantasy Star
Earthbound
Lunar
Albert Odyssey
Shining Force
Y's
Breath of Fire
and most games of the past relied on so much more than cool posing cliched characters on the cover of a box.
Niche or not, companies set the bar for what is in as far as the content go...
What I should of put was hyperbolic brite anime characters with loud obnoxious voices. FF has always brought more flesh toned characters to the plate, and not just through style.
Vaan from FFXII, reminded me of Aladdin mixed with Tatooine farm boy Luke Skywalker.
It really doesn't matter, times change, Sakaguchi has a Miyazaki heart, Nomura/Kitase has a Shibuya heart.
Every FF is 9000x better than games like Last Rebellion, Trinity Universe, Cross Edge, and all these Loli/Moe Anime's.
It's Sakaguchi's fault for creating such a rich lore of quality/diversity. That's like Tite Kubo taking over Kishimoto's One Piece, we'd be in some serious trouble.
