I hear everyone comparing Microsoft with disney buying all the biggest franchise and yet Netflix and hbo max are the two with the biggest growth this year.
All Sony has to do is to create new and fresh franchises in order to compete. I believe both companies will be successful regardless.
I started building a VR version on Dreams last month but I gave up as the tools are not really as friendly as advertised.

For example Sony interactive studios need the approval of Sony music to use one of their songs in a game.
In the case of Funamination, their goal is to be on as many devices available to potentially maximize subscriptions.
Imagine the loss of revenue if Sony music or Sony pictures catalog could only be heard or seen on a Sony hardware.
Game boy and ps1 were amazing sales as gaming was not as mainstream as it is today.
Nowadays most consoles are expected to sell between 50 to 100 million minimum.
