I think it's strictly a marketing strategy, based on cultural markers, etc.
Stop supporting game devs that do this kind of sh*t. Seriously, it's not worth it just to play the latest iteration of a game that's close to the one that came before it. EA is feeling the heat these days; there's a reason why.
