im currently a beta tester(Sorry Im breaking the Rules), it sounds like you guys havent beta tested yet, the stuff you do on it is rediculous, just like live, you get a gamer card, your apartment, and other tidbits. you can watch previews of movies an stuff on it without crapping your hardrive, hell, it has potential to let us watch live video feeds on it, imagine E3.

blu-ray discs dont scratch like HD-DVDs, they have a hard coating that stops that from happening, and yes, you can still watch blu-ray movies on the old players, just that you wont be able to use the special features with them, anyway, most BD players out there are FW upgradible
