Casual gamers would flock over and buy the PS3 until it was outsold nation wide if it was at $299, just like the PS2...remember that also started with a weak game lineup.
The reason you have trouble understanding this is because your a hardcore gamer not a casual gamer. So for you as long as the games are good you buy it.
Casual gamers on the other hand will get it as long as its dirty cheap and has decent games.

Even though the PS3 is $100 more expensive than the xb360, more casual gamers will buy the PS3 simply because of brand recognition and sequels to games they love and played on PS2.

Yes I like the PS3. I think the reason people come so hard on it is because Sony proved to be a little arrogant and overhyped the whole thing.
Still I believe that the PS3 will do really well and outperform the Xbox 360 in the long run due to stronger brand loyalty, better selection of games, and when Blu-ray wins that will be another reason for people to buy it.

My PS3 has never died on me. The Sixaxis issue is minimal and just lasts for a few seconds.
This Doesn't compare to your whole console crashing down on you.
