the only totally free mmo(if you want to call it that) that i can think of is free realms. every mainstream mmo requires a purchase,(with the exception of DCUO which is now free to download and play, with limitations) whether digital or hard copy. if you analyze the phrase "free to play" then it seems the issue is subscription rather than initial purchase, as 99% of all games requires an initial purchase, thus guild wars is then very much the same concept, as will be GW2.

personally, i like my 360, however, after watching the MS "conference", i am now wondering if MS is going to throw in the towel.

if i remember correctly, EA does run their own servers, not MS, so it could very well be on EA's end and not MS' end. maybe you should research that and find out.
