Im not sure how to put this but it all DEPENDS on the kind of game being made.
For eg in Crysis the graphics made everything come alive and made it so much more immersive. Lets say they went with a cartoonish style or cel shaded with impressionistic design then maybe when the aliens appeared the difference wouldnt be much.

Playable vs enjoyable, quite a big difference.
Even tweaking the controls slightly off in a shooter, or the movement controls in a 3rd person game can make it a very unpleasant experience over many hrs of gameplay.
IF its not tweaked correctly then its incomplete and is not playable. Because its released in a deadline doesn't mean its ready. It may be just about playable but not enough to be fun.
