Fixing bugs etc is 85% complete.

It is rumored that progression in the Beta *may* carry over to the full version of the game.
In fact when watching IGN's beta coverage that aired on the 16th - the Bungie manager said that's being discussed.
So, it may not be a total loss if you level up the characters.

Both types (hard and soft) have their advantages and disadvantages.
For people like me who have to pay ridiculous amounts in import duties and taxes, Digital availability of any title is extremely useful.
The only two issues I had with my DS4 were: battery life and the thumbsticks.
However I changed them both! upgraded the battery from 1000m to 1800m and installed the XB1 thumbsticks (there are truly better in my view).
Both items were on Amazon and multiple instructions to properly install them are found on Youtube.
On the PS4 side, I believe part of the issue is that (most) developers had no idea the were going to use 8gb of GDDR5.
Now that this information is out and they are getting used to the hardware, we will see a better future for our games. Same as the XB1- developers will improve their understanding of the kit over time.
The Patch does not current allow gameplay as the maps arent included in it (the patch only paves the way for future gameplay). I believe they said by the end of this week we will be able to play.
