if you are a normal parent that knows nothing of gaming you shouldn't be getting your kid a console without doing a little research. Any responsible parent will do a quick research before getting something they have no knowledge of for their 7-8 year old kid.

If HDDVD was include in the xbox360 from the start it will have killed xbox 360 right off.
The xbox 360 pro was $399. A external HDDVD add-on that came almost 2 years later was $179. So if they were to release xbox 360 will HD-DVD drive from the start will could have cost $599 for a xbox $360 pro. That will just kill the sales. Less people will buy it since the cost is much higher. The userbase will be less.
Now adding the price differnce of standalone HD-DV...
Getting a ps3 would be a better choice since it will save you lots of hassle and extra $ money later on.
Your $200 is not just $200. You will most likely be adding in a Harddrive later on and that will add in $50 or so. And do you want your kid to play online too?, that will add $40 a year. I can't be sure about the internet download speed but for transfering with-in your own network the PS3 is faster.
I'm sure many people didn't even bother to look at what the PS3 comes with. The ethernet adapter on the PS3 has got to be one of the most overlook PS3 hardware.

The FMV in MGS4 is INGAME. The FMV in FF13 is CGI. That's a huge difference. One is in 3d space and the other is a FLAT video.
Even a PS1 can run the FMV of all FF games because it's just a CG video.

don't forget about eh previous core and premium before the release of the ELITE. NO HDMI support, that's 8 million xbox 360 doesn't even have freaken HDMI port. Buying a $10 cable is not even a option since what you're going to do without a port.

A exclusive bundle means that it's coming from the main company and not just whatever a retailer toss in together.
They are normally priced at a lower price then the items in the bundle added together.
example: Ps3 $400 +GTA4 $60 = $460
PS3 bundle with GTA4 = $430. This is of course just a example but If you are looking into buying GTA4 and a Ps3, the extra $30 saving will surly be somewhat of a deciding factor.

I have a 7 year old 16x dvd drive that I use for encoding, movies, gaming, etc ,that still works great. and it's slot load too.
WE can even Burn dvd-rs at 16x now, so for MS to mess up on a 12 dvd drive,, sigh......just....
