It's a shame Steam Machines didn't take off. Coupled with Vulkan, it would have allowed low-level access or "coding to the metal" on GPUs.
It also would have been a one size fits all OS (Linux kernel) that wasn't bloated, taking away from the processing pipeline.
Rest assured that the next Doom game, won't be using Vulkan because that IP is now owned by Microsoft. I'm sure it'll likely be DX12 or 13, etc.
I just played this game yesterday and it is so much fun with the "rock, paper, scissors" aspect.
The last VF I played consistently was VF2 from 1994. I need to practice or I'm going to get my butt handed to me.
Not to mention as was pointed out on Reddit, purchasing ZeniMax is also an API war because games like Doom probably will switch from Vulkan in favor of DX12. Definitely a fear factor in their purchase.

This is historical ever since the Netscape days. Look up "Embrace, extend, and extinguish" and then you'll get a better idea of what they're trying to do with the gaming industry.

Basically every modern 3D platformer from Banjo Kazooie, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, plus Spyro and everything in between–borrowed heavily on the foundation that was Mario 64.
