First off, it is 8.8 million shipped not sold. Secondly that number also includes navigators.

I won't lie, not too keen on a new generation just yet, main (only) reason is I do not want to buy a new console, mine is only 4 years old. . .wait, what? Yikes! Still, I do not want to be stuck in old gen again till I can afford the nextbox.

This may cause some controversy but Microsoft have been more successful than Sony as far as gaming related profit is concerned my friend. You need only look at the financial reports over the years to conclude this.
So it would make more sense for MS to continue making consoles having been so successful.
You seem to forget that making more games also means facing more financial risk due to production costs and sometimes you end up with a financial bomb like Move Heroes. Xbo...
