Its simple. They made the mistake of not giving gamers options and assuming they know better than gamers what gamers want.
For example MS assumed that gamers would love being forced to get an xbox with Kinetic. They assumed digital is the way to go NOW and that ALL gamers wont mind. They assumed that all gamers have fast broadband speed internet now.

Already paid for mine as i knew but hoping there would be no shortages like it was the PS3. Got my 60 giger in Feb 2007 so i learnt my lesson.

Yeah i know but compare to the PS3. Manufacturing the PS4 should be a walk in the park for them.
Whenever there is a shortage, customers will seriously consider getting an alternative. So shortage of PS4 will also indirectly help MS and Nin as well.
Weather people like it or not mobile gaming is going to get bigger as time goes by. The question is how Sony will respond to this. As we have seen Sony is hoping to get a piece of the pie with the focus on indie.
Which is sad really. When Crysis came out i was in awe of its graphics but then i found myself going back to counter strike and good old starcraft lol!
