I can't speak for everyone, but I don't play old games on a new system. That's what I have my PS3 for. I imagine for the most part, only teens or adults with no job and are still living at home with their parents sell or trade their old systems in when a new one comes out. For us others, we can afford to keep our old systems and don't have a need for backwards compatibility.
And if a person does trade in their old system and aren't one of the two persons ...
