While I agree with your statement, you also should consider other factors when big companies downsize.
1. May hurt morale and productivity of the remaining employees
2. The loss of valuable workers may leave the remaining employees with larger workloads. If you do not have enough employees to handle the extra work, who will?
3. Remaining employees find work elsewhere because they do not feel secure.
