Hardware lasts a lot longer than you think these days. I've had my PC for nearly 3 years now and it still blazes through anything I want to play at 1920x1080. The only thing I've had to upgrade is the video card. It gets more affordable every day.

If you just want to take something out of the box and play games on it, get a console. They will always offer the best value if all you want to do is play games.
With a PC you have a lot more options and flexibility, but you pay a premium for that. With a PC you can emulate every single platform up to the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation quite well and you get a full computer, not just a gaming device. However, you'll end up paying for that.
