That's what I'm saying. Consoles aren't exciting any more. The Gamecube was exciting to me because it was a pretty significant leap from the N64. Now the difference isn't really that outstanding. I'm burned out. Tired. I want my game collection to be useful beyond one piece of hardware. Enter SteamOS/Steambox.
Maybe "revive" is the better term. Consoles are stale. It's the same old thing every time with a bump in technical specs. For me personally, the console love is just simply gone. What valve is offering is the most excited I've been for a console since the Gamecube was announced.

I agree that at the end of the day it's about the games. Yes, Valve needs to show some strong exclusives to win people over. I play a lot of indie games, though, so this is already a win for me. Valve is way more friendly to independent developers than console manufacturers are.
