Your assumptions keep you from the evident point. People want a choice. Competition causes better games. When Madden had other devs trying their hand at football, EA took every measure to better the look and feel of the game. And that's what everybody keep missing here. No matter what, 2K was better. The gameplay was much better. The presentation was much better. And every game has their problems. The point is, EA has no competition so there is no way they are looking to go above...

No there's no reason. Parents don't look at the ratings. And if they do, they figure it's either their kid embarrassing them, pitching a fit in Gamestop or the game's mature rating. Also, politicians keep going after those games as if they don't have a M rating on it. And the last doozy is that the ratings were put in place due to parents and organizations complaining about what type of media reaches the kids.
Go figure...
