The delay isn't that long (just a few months) so i don't think it's anything major like problems with the engine. Maybe it's the career mode (the make your own path thing) or some other modes.

My only complain is the weird and frustrating online section. I can't just search and join a game. It has this weird countdown sessions where they are all empty. It's frustrating getting online. There should be an option to select type of race then you play.
