what about half-life 1 & 2? half life 2 only had hl2 deathmatch, and that was a plus, not the main content, most of the online content where mods, such as counter strike, golden eye source, zombie master and synergy

just look at the people who works making games on rpg maker 2003, someone even made "3d-like" characters and animation, just because of the challenge of making it

i prefer turn based rpgs, mostly because you have time to think a strategy while fighting, a good example was mana khemia or persona 4, in which battles would go from offense to defense depending on the damage. trying to break from a "healing loop" and start attacking before mana/MP runs out was challenging and fun... and also you could take your time to hear the music while playing lol

Don't get me wrong, Wii has potential, and its online system is decent (Mario kart wii, monster hunter tri) but 64 players in a FPS? that's too much
Also, the wii need better defenses against hacking/cheating.
But it would be fun to see hackers using aimbot in the top of a mountain getting kill after kill with a sniper rifle. after all, targets wont lack.
