I think mentioning the competition in any way is a poor method of advertising in the gaming industry. People play games to forget about shit, not think about how much better the experience is then what they "could" be playing.

this article is essentially giving sony permission to charge as much as MS does for their service. although sony gamers may like psn being free, sony is not benefiting from it in a competitive way. MS is able to use the constant revenue to promote their console, which, in the end sells both software and subscriptions
