This is one of the reasons I bought into the PSVR for experiences just like this on console.
It does have a non vr mode.
VR part of the game itself is just a PSVR mode just like resident evil 7 had a vr and non vr mode.

It would also be nice if your buddy played with you on your system of choice as well but like you said he is stuck with the other one.

I am almost 40 myself and although I do not nearly have as much time to game anymore I still love to game and see myself continuing til I can't pick up a controller.

This is the part that I didn't like from the E3 showing. It threw off the whole vibe for the few minutes it was on there.
This is the phone interactive thing that from the reaction I saw at the E3 theater experience it wasn't too popular.
Everyone pretty much got quiet and had a look of like wtf was that, then more games came and it was back to the hoots and hollers of happy gamers.
I mean it may be for some people out there but...
What kinda sucks about this is some games need longer to develop than that.
Not every studio or team are running hundreds of employees, that can churn out quality content in that time..
So in the future we may see less polish and more rushed content.

I think E3 this year was a bit different because they had a shit ton more people are with it being open to the public and all.
All the conferences were a bit different they had a different feel than previous E3's.
Nintendo was actually making a splash this year with that Ubi surprise. ( Nintendo kinda brought it for being Nintendo)

But instead of you thanking Phil and Xbox, they should be thanking you for being a mega fan.
At this point they know the FANS will buy what ever they throw at you, lead you on (PR, hopes and dreams) for another gen and then rinse and repeat again.
They have you hooked but not all of you just the fanatics.
