I doubt you'd feel the raw emotions that most of us went through back then if you started playing it now. You'll most likely be jaded by today's graphics at first due to the pre-rendered backgrounds, blocky bodies/hands and emotionless faces, midi soundtrack, and turn-based battles. Also factoring in that you have never played an RPG before I'm not sure if you'll come to love it as much as we do but you can always try it out. Halo was nothing new and FF7 today is nothing new but back in 97 it was a milestone masterpiece. I doubt it'll change significantly since Maxis is known for creating games with reasonable minimum system specs to reach a wider audience. Most of the Sims fanbase is quite young and do not have the money to be shelling out for top of the line systems.
