Not if the new ideas suck. Wii U's gamepad was a gimmick and nothing more so people said no to it. Why pay for something you don't want?

Initial sales definitely do matter, especially from an investor stand point. At launch, consoles will sell at their highest profit point.
If initial sales suck, it leads to a price cut which leads to less profit in the long run. Ask anyone in the industry and they'd much rather consoles sell better at launch than 5 years down the road.

I'd like to think the majority of the population is smart enough to see through this blatant advertising, but sadly I don't think that is the case.
