i built my pc for $600 back in 2011 and i can play the latest games on high settings,you dont need to build a powerful/expensive pc to play todays games, a mid range pc will do the job,and even if you still build a $1000 pc its still cheaper than owning a console in the long run, new console games are $60,where as its $30-40 (not including steam sales where a triple A game can drop to as low as $7) plus you have to pay for xbox live/ps plus ,play and charge kit on xbox etc,it all adds up over...
