The 4 things "no one knows" are:
1. Controller improved.
2. Can be used to watch TV.
3. Kinect improved.
4. And MS doing a 180 on a lot of the E3 announcements.

Because Rockstar didn't release GTA V a year after GTA IV. Instead they released two, IMO, brilliant DLCs that at least to me lessened the bad taste left by GTA IV.
With that said, if AC4 turns out to be a good game and an improvement over AC3 I see no reason why it shouldn't outsell it. But I'm not surprised the pre-orders and expectations are lower.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with you. So far I haven't seen anything that indicates that next-gen will require more effort or be more brutal or that the consumers will be more thoughtful about what they purchase.

Agreed. AC2 was stellar but the yearly releases have burned me out to the point where I haven't even considered buying the last two.
