Interesting. The game is not 8 sq. miles, but spans 8 miles between LA river and west Hollywood (which is ~8 miles).

Spoke to a beta tester for these patches, and he informed me that Valve is just trolling...
Sony does not impose region free to the developers. If they want to lock their game from being played to different regions...they can do so. So far none has.
