PS3 use's 256MB of XDR and 256MB of regular DDR3. The XDR is a very advanced memory but at the amount there is in the current ps3, not it's not all that expensive at all. Besides DDR5 is faster than XDR and next gen will be uisng DDR5 or better by then. But by no means is memory that expensive these days...
Considering most mid-range laptop TODAY for 600$ now come with 8GB of ram... if the PS4 wants to be on par with computer fromk 1 or 2 yrs from now I'd say it needs MINIMUM 16GB of ram....
