The problem isn't to do with a more/less focus on narrative or gameplay. It's to do with a loss of perspective. A failure to empathize with the user and actually deliver truly powerful emotions and a clearly defined experience.

Don't get me wrong, new mechanics and revolutionary dynamics are great and now and then become imperative. But in the end, they're nothing if you can't spring forth these emotions in players.

You've totally missed the point about it all together.

Game design is all about emotions and experiences, this game is a beautiful tribute to that. Games like Journey are fantastic at this too, but usually for a lot of developers you either have to keep it simple or go crazy and over focus on mechanics and generic gameplay.

Last of Us is a game that managed to snatch both of these and tie them up in a beautiful and complex knot while not compromising the ...

I think they chose Source due to more familiarity with it amongst the devs as well as its apparent ease of use. In comparison to Frostbite, something they likely hadn't had much dabbling with before.

Not true TechMech. Sony is the one with a big launch FPS title.

I got hands on with Killzone SF at Eurogamer, and I have to say i was quite impressed. A good balance between 2 and 3 as far as I'm concerned.

I think Sony's lineup is kind of smart actually.

The two main ones that bring me to that conclusion are Killzone; the FPS genre has many followers and this is an exclusive, and Knack; a game that is more likely to appeal to parent...

Less likely.

It's usually typical to hide what the main character looks like, the partial exception sometimes being cinematics.

But you could argue that detail is bumped up in cinematics.

I agree with DigitalRaptor, especially regarding Mercenary. The problem there was definitely that a lot of reviewers were approaching that game with the console game mentality. Hence they were delivered something they considered the standard.

I bet Guerilla take that as quite a compliment though, to come out with a handheld FPS, have it marked to console FPS standards, and still come out with 78? Pretty decent imo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Microsoft are the ones doing all the talking, and failing to prove the power they claim/dispute.

-Indeed the PS4 does contain a pay wall. But lets not play cloak and dagger with this, the two systems are doing it differently. To give the short explanation, MS is hiding all online related content behind the pay wall.

-It's technically still advertising, fair enough it's not a tedious bunch of Kool-aids latest repertoires, or a massive banner blocking my screen for 5 minutes (At least I hope not..), but, it is still advertising.

Are you suggesting that both Microsoft and Apple are illiterate, and incapable of using 'your' and 'you're' in the correct context?

I just hope they're careful in how they implement this narrative, it can be quite easy for it to get repetitive and tedious. Brink's folly approach definitely comes to mind.

People keep saying not to compare to the Killzone games, but they are both sci-fi FPS games, and admitably do both look quite impressive.

I hope the narrative events are less brink-ish and more like the ones in Killzone 3 MP; I did actually enjoy them, they didn't feel like th...

I'd agree Sony observed the competition coming into this next gen, it's common logic to do so, lest you wish to trip and stumble.

Not quite sure how the hard drive was MS's idea.... infact I'm quite certain the PS3 was the one that allowed you to extract and insert a standard HDD.

Also 'indy was our idea too'. You started to blabber near the end there with this and the above, you choice of wording really does c...
