AC black flag was the last one in the series that I thought got it right. It was the first time in a while that the AC games felt like they had a concious decision to try something new and innovative with their world design and mechanics, still not in the same league as The Witcher but it was the first time I thought the franchise was taking a step in the right direction since AC2!
