For every rule there is an exception. Even during the 83 crash there was boom in Europe with the Commodore 64, a crash does not mean the absence of product, let alone a profitable one. When a game like Tomb Raider can sell 4 million and still be considered a failure, when Capcom only has $152 million in the bank; it's not crazy to think something is wrong with the industry. Yeah GTA did well, but that's one game from a major company. I'd say compare that to a middle market develop...
Pretty much, the problem was that everyone could make a game and a lot of them were not very good. They sacrificed quality for quantity for the sake of making a quick buck and it bit them in the ass.
I don't what console you talk about, when you go on to say it the greatest console ever, I can't help but cringe.
