3D and VR are very different experiences. I personally just find 3D distracting in an annoying way, VR however is completely immersive and tricks your brain into feeling like you are inside a virtual world. It's the type of thing that once you experience you can't go back from.

I think you could theoretically get to another galaxy the problem is when you start the game you need upgrades to travel very far and the only way to get those is to mine resources on planets, so you're sort of forced to move towards the center of the galaxy to progress at all. This is why many people speculate that the secret at the center of the galaxy will be some type of mechanism that allows you to warp to other galaxies.
