This article is 100% wrong. Aonuma said in the live stream they removed the towns, characters etc. just for the E3 demo as they didn't want to give away the story yet.

In case anyone missed it in the live stream (that's currently still going on) Aonuma said they removed all the towns, story content and characters from the E3 demo as to not give away any of the story yet. This game is going to be epic!
Probably because the devs who make the Mario Party games are not the same devs who make the main Mario games. Nintendo EAD1 and 2 make the big Mario games, 3d Land, 3d World, Galaxys etc. They are probably working on Mario NX now.

Sony are known for this. Same thing happened at last year's E3. Games mentioned last year that weren't mentioned this year: Hitman, FFVII, World of FF, Dreams, Shenmue 3...
Especially that Hideo Kojima game, I don't see that game being released until 2018 at the earliest.
