My top three would be... the purple ice climber (because he wears purple. And that's awesome.), Dr. Mario (because he got an advanced degree for a puzzle game), and Toad (because of his incredible driving skills).
Personally, I was more excited by what the guy from Rare said. Largely because I'm of the age group that thinks swearing makes you more believable. :)

I really struggled with it. Luigi's Mansion, too. They were the first games I ever played that required dual analog input. As I'm saying this, I'm realizing that the Mario and Luigi games for GameCube were shooters... Odd, considering people think it lacked quality shooters...

Really, you answer your own question. IV isn't included because they are just doing the Loto trilogy. Furthermore (and more logical, actually), the second trilogy is already available for DS. As such, they wouldn't release them in a cheaper medium. Kind of like how there really aren't that many Final Fantasy games on the Virtual Console.
"Nintendo would be lucky just to get ports of those games." Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for, actually.
People always think Chinatown Wars when they look for proof that Rockstar will work with Nintendo. There is more too it. GTA Advance, Bully, Manhunt 2, etc.
