While not gimped in any way shape or form, you are missing out on a lot by not having Mass Effect 1, but if you needed too you could just play it on a friends Xbox, or the PC to get the backstory.

My vote goes to either Red Dead Redemption, or Halo Reach, I really really liked GOW3 but I didn't LOVE it, and ME2 I haven't played yet (getting this holiday, loved the first one,) Black Ops is fun, and I really enjoy it, but it's not GOTY caliber.
