I'm not sure about this game, but some really competitive multiplayer games like Counterstrike, Team Fortress 2, and Starcraft 2 use beta patches so that they can streamline the process and tune their games better.
This is, however, a single player game, so I don't know what the f- is going on.

I don't think it would fit into the context of Toy Soldiers, tower defense fit the entrenchment tactics of WWII, there wasn't so many defensive operations way back then.

Settle down. The Xbox and PS3 are well above the dividing line between love and hate. There's not really much to worry about.
No hotkeys is definitely a turnoff for me. But, I've always imagined what a zombie RTS would be like.
