I think they'll do well on the games front. I just wish they'd give us a release date for the Wii U. Not doing so points to a later launch.
Your "resistance to change" quote is taken out of context. It's about the development process and making games for wider audiences. Not if the west likes a new COD every year.
There is nothing made up in this article. Here are more examples of key Japanese developers that have been critical of their home country's approach to development this gen:

Most of their characters would probably need to be third party to be recognizable by masses.
It doesn't sound like you read the article. Nowhere does it state that ALL gamers are resistant to change.
It does, of course, focus on the outspoken group of gamers that vocalize their dislike for the new controller... because that's what the article is about. That's like reading a CNN headline that says "Atheists protest Nativity Scene" and assuming the writer is speaking about ALL atheists. It doesn't make sense.
This is very small-minded thinking. If nobody tried anything new, console gaming as you know it would not be the same as it is today.
There's no reason you can't improve the way you interact with games while improving the storytelling aspect of them. Having one does not mean sacrificing the other.
Just bought Bit.Trip Beat from this!
Well, I will agree that Nintendo did not show a plethora of examples last year in ways it could be utilized. However, there are a lot of fairly obvious ways to utilize the controller and at the very least, make modern gaming more streamlined.
I don't want to put anyone who doesn't like the controller in one specific category. Some are resistant to change or are put off by the size. Some might just dislike Nintendo. Some are taking a wait and see approach, which is fai...
I've never been big on track-balls of any sort.
I would like to try that Falcon controller though.
I really like games like these for some reason. Although they infuriate me a lot of the time.
It's probably what makes succeeding so satisfying.
Hmm... this might set an interesting precedent for the future of Steam.
Nintendo does a pretty good job at playing to their strengths while appealing to wider audiences, I think.
I also like a lot of Platinum Games' work.
Sony will have good content but they usually choose to reveal most of their new games before E3 for some reason. Microsoft has pretty much told the press that games are not their main concern this year.
It's pretty much Nintendo's show to lose this year.
Didn't take too long. Good for gamers at the very least.
They are rushing to make sure all versions come out on time. They're only going to put in extra effort with tablet features. But who knows how much they'll make use of it. You should not take his quotes as an indicator of the Wii U's power more than they are of a developer trying to ship out 4 versions of the same game on day 1.
The game apes Smash Bros. in pretty much every way but the damage system. This new mode sounds a bit odd, honestly. The percentage system is one of the reasons I prefer SB to so many other fighters.
So the shitty game will get cheap even faster than most movie-tie in games. Good, I guess.
I won't see this film in theaters. I'll leave it on in the background when it hits FX in a few years.
The author writes that he believes a video game is no place to show something like this, yet provides no reason why this is the case. Games don't even get close to the amount of violence/gore seen in film and books, yet they receive much more criticism for it.
Despite the lack of vehicles, the Beta feels a lot like Battlefield (which I think is a good thing).
It's got some issues (glitches, crashing), but hopefully it's true that it's based on old code and the game will launch in much better shape.
If anything, I think the people that were turned off by it are too used CoD's gameplay.
Terrible, terrible article. It comes off as a 12 year old telling you why his system is so much better than the other guy's.
Alex Osborn, stop writing for this industry.
Thanks for checking it out.
